A couple years ago I decided to try a new clay art project with my students that ultimately has replaced a previous lesson (Clay Gargoyle Head) and implemented the challenge of fusing function and sculpture into their work.  The Ugly Jug Project examines the duality of function and sculpture, allowing students to explore this combination for designing their own work.  I like to tell them a little bit of history about "face jugs" and voodoo jugs."  It is also an opportunity to help students practice solving formulas for circumference of a circle and volume of a cylinder in terms of their own project.
